The land where we grow vines is markedly influenced by coastal Mediterranean climate. The are surrounding the Gulf of Follonica is one of the sunniest and warmest in Tuscany and the central-northern part of the peninsula. Annual rainfall is sufficient, although increasingly irregularly distributed. The south-southeast exposure, gentle slope, and sclerophyllous woodland located north of the grounds shield the vineyard from the cold winds of the surrounding hills, creating ideal mesoclimate.
The soil texture is characterized by a prevalence of red clay with some sand. Clay contributes high cation exchange capacity: this allows for the uptake of plentiful minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. This brings power and structure to the wines, along with a finesse and elegance due to the limestone. The abundant skeleton—pebbles and stones—facilitates water drainage, avoiding waterlogging even in the wettest months.
Being a “benefit company” means, by statute, that in carrying out our activity, we pursue goals of environmental and territorial protection, including through the development of sustainable production techniques and the use of renewable energy sources. We aim to create exceptional wines that authentically express the territory and the unique health of its nature—plant, animal, human, and soil.
An element of focus in all these efforts is the health of the microbiome, which deeply influences that of our vines and subsequently the quality of our wines. Through numerous techniques we are gradually increasing our soil’s organic content, primary production and the vineyard’s overall biodiversity.
