2018 represents a turning point for Podere La Pace, thanks to the changes we have introduced in the vineyards, but also perfect climate conditions.
Under the leadership of our new agronomist, Stefano Bartolomei, we guarantee a closer management of the vineyards, a constant presence to monitor the plants and the skills to introduce modern techniques to improve the quality of the products. The 2018 harvest, which started at the end of August with the Chardonnay and the Viognier and continued the first week of September with the Merlot, proves the success of our agronomic management.
Keeping in mind our uncompromised commitment to organic cultivate (our vineyards and winery are certified as biological) we have adopted specific fertilization based on animal and green manure, of leguminous, grasses and fava beans crops. The vines showed already in the Spring an excellent state of health. Then, inspired by the modern microbiome science, this year we have started a highly ecological program aimed at reinforcing the plant protection, using the application of plant extracts whose function is to stimulate the development of “anticorps” against the typical illnesses of the vines. The results are amazing and notwithstanding a rainy Spring season, our vines were not affected by mildew. The maturation of all our six varieties has reached a perfect point this year, a harmonic balance between sugars and phenols.
Thanks to this new approach, the 2018 Chardonnay and Viognier feature a lower alcohol percentage, a good level of acidity and more freshness than in previous years. This year we also harvested, for the first time, the Merlot in two separate lots, about 10 days apart, with the later lot dedicated to the future Gold Label. The same will occur for the Cabernet Franc. All red-grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) will benefit this year from the excellent work done in the vineyards and also the favourable climate conditions.
